As a natural product, cotton poses challenges to modern, high-speed textile processing and manufacturing. It shows considerable variation in fiber length, and as fibers are liable to breakage during handling and processing, the amount of short fiber increases during manufacturing stages. Short fiber content and fiber length distribution are thus of major concern to cotton producers and processors. Indeed a substantial USDA research program has been devoted to the subject and resulted in the development of High Volume Instrumentation, to measure fiber strength, length and other factors.
